My students attend a large, public middle school in New York City. Our school community consists of mostly working parents/guardians with a third of the students below poverty level. The student population at our school is extremely diverse. We have many military families from Fort Wadsworth, a large population of students with disabilities and many English Language Learners. Our school offers a variety of talent programs that gives students the opportunity to shine in various ways besides academically.
Our school is constantly working to bring new and innovative teaching methods to our students to prepare them for their future.
Our science department strives to bring hands-on culturally relevant STEM experiences to our students, to help them easily understand and love science.
My Project
My science students need lighted microscopes to explore the itsy-bitsy science world around them. Many times, students cannot comprehend how materials are made of tiny particles they cannot see with the naked eye. They need microscopes that can illuminate tiny objects, so they can see the much smaller pieces they are comprised of.
Currently, I do not have enough microscopes for all of my students.
The microscope I am seeking uses a battery powered, LED light from underneath the specimen to illuminate it. This will give my students a much clearer and brighter view of their specimens. I am also trying to add microscopes so more of my students will be able to use them for longer periods of time and not have to share them with five other students. The microscopes I am asking for will allow my students not only to see for the first time the smallest of specimens, but will allow them to understand how the microscopic world functions.
