Seeing is Believing: Choir Robe and Stole Cleaning and Care
My students need to have the choir robes and stoles dry cleaned, bar coded and bagged so they are ready and clean for the upcoming school year. We want our students to look their best.
My singers come from diverse backgrounds and attend a large urban high school of more than 3,800 students. More than 60 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Approximately 30% of our school are English language learners (ESL), including a large refugee population.
Approximately 25% of my students have special needs with an individual instruction plan. Many students are not able to pay choir fees or provide their own supplies due to finances. As teachers, we strive to provide almost everything that the choir students will need for performances so that all 425 singers can participate with pride.
Many of the students have language barriers, making it hard to communicate with parents regarding costume needs. Although we have great parent support, it is not possible for parents to pay or donate all the funds needed to train and equip a choral program with more than 425 singers.
Our choirs provide a community and global connection for students. My students are very proud of their performances and want to look and sound their best on stage.
My Project
Mr. James Belt manages a Fabric Care Company that specializes in school choir, band, and theater costumes. He gives our school a fifty percent discount and also picks-up and delivers for free. Additionally, Mr. Belt bags each garment individually so that they can be returned and hung on the garment racks without fear of getting soiled in our costume storage areas. Mr. Belt generously repairs missing hooks or zippers so that each costume is ready for the student to take off the rack and wear. He also bar-codes the costume so that each one can clearly be identified as coming from our school and belonging to a particular student. Mr. Belt also shares his knowledge of fabrics and costume care and helps us understand the best way to care for our costumes and preserve them for many years so multiple generations can enjoy our them.
The choir members sing with more confidence and pride when they look their best wearing a clean costume that is assigned only to them for the year that is neatly pressed and in a garment bag.
