My students need a color printer, toner ink, a few more headphones, and some books that show them that they are not alone in their incredible journeys.
The students at our school are incredibly diverse, and we see that as a growing strength. Currently, my students come from El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Ukraine, Russia, and the Pacific Islands.
We have students from all over the world in classes with students born and raised in the mountains of North Carolina.
60% of our school receives free or reduced rate lunch, well above the state average, with students overcoming all kinds of obstacles to make it to school and focus on working hard and doing their best each day.
My Project
This is a very multi-faceted order. At this time there is one color printer for the majority of our high school serving 1,400 students, and we frequently get emails to STOP PRINTING IN COLOR- we know, the ink is expensive. Printing in color in my classroom, however, is more of a necessity than a luxury.
When ELLs (English Language Learners) are thrust into all English environments and classrooms, their opportunities for success are limited from day one.
Working with and creating images and documents in color that are clear to see and understand regardless of language suddenly levels that playing field. My students are NOT unintelligent, though they spend most of their day thinking and feeling that they are. Color image sorts are one fantastic way they get to show what they know-and I love getting to remind them just how much that is!
I have been trained in Project GLAD strategies, which are whole classroom strategies with incredible scaffolds for language learners of every single level. These strategies include image sorts, picture walks, and "living walls" that are added to and created right in front of/with the students. The printer and ink will ensure that we can scaffold their learning as quickly as we can think of ideas how!
Finally, I added basic supplies and some bilingual/multicultural books to add to our classroom library. Besides the obvious pencils and notebooks, I chose books at several different reading levels that my students from multiple cultures and backgrounds can identify with. I can't explain the magic of sitting with high school students who just want to be read to, to hear a story, to relate to a character that isn't a white American. Many of them grew up without any books in their home, and it is a privilege to share them.
