Help me give my students the gift of a lifetime by learning how to cook using T-falls nonstick aluminum cookware as well as bake using the Chef's nonstick bakeware set. Creating meals together are memories for a lifetime.
The special education population we serve have already graduated high school. We have 16 students between the ages of 18-21 years old. We are coaching these men and women into the role of adulthood. They are not ready for post secondary education, nor can they live independently at this time.
I tell the students they may have a disability, but they really have abilities.
We work on a variety of skills to enhance independence by developing daily living skills, self advocacy, vocational readiness, self advocacy as well as recreation and leisure.
These students are a blast to work with in the garden, at the food bank, or in the cafe'. They are a creative bunch with impressive ideas. They have progressed so much since the start of the year!
My Project
These cooking supplies will be a beginning for many of our kitchen adventures to come. We are starting this project from ground zero, meaning no supplies. We have been visiting stores, taking inventory, pricing various kitchen appliances and supplies. We have discussed different foods and prep methods. In an effort to help these 18-21 year old students become more independent, it would be helpful to teach them how to function in the kitchen safely. The students will learn to safely cook meals using the T-fall cookware. They will learn how to use the oven and bake suing the Chef's bakeware. They will also need to learn the importance of cleanliness in the kitchen when handling food(they have already passed the Oregon Food Handler Test).
Creating learning experiences while preparing and cooking meals will be a lifelong learning experience.
In helping these young men and women become more independent, it will also foster meaningful relationships with a productive approach. The long-term goal is to provide a mini menu to the staff at the beginning of the week, take orders, price, shop, prepare, and serve the meals on Friday.
