Ms. Lloyd from Charlotte NC is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 20 paperback copies of a book titled "Seedfolks".
Basil, rosemary, oregano, palms and ferns have set the stage for a great play that my students are all getting ready to perform. They walk inside my classroom and this is some of what they see growing by the window. It is their work. Ninth and tenth grade students are getting their hands dirty and working collaboratively as they learn about the importance of plants in our lives. In my Greenhouse Biology class, we are studying biology with an immersion of hands on plant activities. My students are already making connections to their lives and I would really like to have this book to keep the momentum going. Our school is considered a high-need community. Although my students know the importance excelling in spite of the odds, they need a little support; hence, the book.
As we talk about and work with the plants, I can see their eagerness to learn more about what they can do with plants. I want them to not just see what plants can do for them, but how they can use what they know about plants to help others. They will spend time reading this book as they learn about gardening. Their last "act" will be to design a garden that they can enjoy; size is not a factor. As we are an inner city school, I think they will make a real connection to fact that the garden in this book is also in the city.
I need 20 of the books so that each student will have his/her own book as we read about how the actions of one little girl planting seeds started a garden that had a huge impact on her neighborhood. We would be reading the book every day for a small portion of the class period. Just reading the book aloud would be beneficial to my students as many of them are not on grade level for reading.
When the curtains close at the end of the play, I want my students to be the folks who will go forth and plant all kinds of seeds that will make a positive difference in another person's life. You can be the folks to plant a seed in my students' lives by helping to fund this project. Please help keep them motivated in their subject while helping them to improve their reading skills.
