My students need 12 copies of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, including Spanish versions, and 35 books related to vegetables and gardens to explore a community garden.
Urban teens in our city are gardeners! I want to encourage my students to participate in a local community garden program with a shared reading of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. Let's work with SEED USA to get middle school students growing---and eating---spinach, tomatoes, and zucchini!
My urban students, many of them English language learners, begin the year reading years below grade level.
We work hard in our mixed grade Language Arts classes to strengthen literacy skills and get ready for high school success. Daily reading is a cornerstone of our classroom. My students are pleasant and cooperative, and they look forward to exploring new topics together in class.
My Project
I am requesting 9 copies of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman to add to copies we already have to make a full class set. In order that all students are able to participate fully, I am also asking for 3 Spanish translations of this book. A collection of vegetable and garden themed picture books will allow new speakers of English to master important food, vegetable, and gardening vocabulary. We're looking forward to reading tomato poetry while we dine on fresh vegetable snacks and learn about gardening opportunities for teens in our community!
Seedfolks tells the story of growing a strong healthy community through a shared garden.
This project will help my students build vocabulary and reading skills as it encourages them to harvest and eat fresh vegetables and adopt healthier food habits.
