My Students

My middle school aged students have cognitive and physical challenges that make daily life a struggle. We are from an inner city middle school in Minnesota. My kids are amazing in so many ways. They have joy in their hearts and love to communicate with others.

Many of my students are non-verbal, but they have a lot to say.

I work very closely with the Speech/Language Clinician in my classroom. We are using a picture communication system embedded into their academics and social times. This is a multi year project and we are seeing many successes.

We are teaching the students a communication system that will be used from K-12, as well as during post high school transition. It is life altering for my students and we want to make it even more accessible with a classroom rolling stand.

My Project

This easel will allow us to show kids an enlarged 50 CORE symbol board. The easel can be rolled up to student desks and help them communicate their thoughts, ideas, and make requests. It will be paired with CORE boards at their desks. The easel will be reversible, so we can turn it around and show them a bulletin board showing the WORD of the WEEK. There will be pictures to show the meaning of the word. We will include student pictures on this side. This support is the beginning of giving kids ways to express themselves everywhere they go.
