This school year, my group of first-grade students are ages 6 and 7. These students live in an area of southwest Florida that is often lacking empathy for the diverse populations who live here. My classroom demographic is made up of diverse ethnicity and economic status. The students I teach speak many languages and come from many different places. By promoting different types of learning, including visual learning, these students will shine. I want to offer as many different types of learning to help my students succeed.
I want my students to have opportunities that promote learning and success.
My Project
In this project, there are books with diverse characters, authors, and subjects. In the selection there are books with topics that are academic such as science and math, as well as, social emotional skills. By reading about these experiences and ideas it opens the students eyes to people who may live different lives from their own. This year my group of students are avid readers and love sharing classroom books with friends and family.
Providing my students with a large assortment of books that meets their needs and opens their eyes to the world is my goal.
Having representation through books encourages students to envision their futures as doctors, dancers, or astronauts regardless of gender, culture, nationality, or sexuality.
