Our room is a place to be challenged and inspired! I am always hunting for innovative ways for my students use their learning and apply it to solve problems, contribute and engage with the world around us.
The 5th grade students at Oaklawn are curious, brilliant and creative learners.
They take advantage of ever opportunity given to them. They love to use modern technological tools to explore ideas. Creative projects - especially those done in small groups - are some of their favorite learning experiences. They ask a lot of questions, and I love to guide them toward discovery of answers and solutions.
I teach three sections of science, so all 5th graders at our school will have the opportunity to experience the activities we do. I work very hard to make the classroom exciting and surprising every day!
My Project
I am starting with three for-sure areas in which the quadcopter would elevate our learning:
1. Students would fly the quadcopter to capture aerial photography of the landscapes around our school. We would use it in science class to study the Next Generation Science Standards of:
- Earth & Human activity (using science to explore human impact and preservation of resources)
- Earth Systems (studying the interactions of systems and proposing solutions to system disruptions)
2. Students would learn about the mechanics and electronics of the rig itself, and along with that the science concepts of gravitational forces and interactions.
3. Students will gather images and data to create and solve real-world math problems, including the important 5th grade concept of area calculation.
(*I would like to note that I have experience with RC aerial vehicles. I'm excited to bring this technology into the classroom!)
Academic content will be at the center of student learning with this device.
Perhaps even more importantly, the quadcopter will inspire students to love learning and contribute to limitless possibilities. Even while sitting in the hangar of our room it will spin our imaginations of what can be done with science and math!
(*This quadcopter has advanced GPS auto-return and safety features making it perfect for use with our class!)
