Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classroom come from a Title I school in a dense area of low-income families with limited opportunities. The majority of students at our school receive a free or reduced lunch. Despite their struggles outside of the classroom environment, my students are motivated to further their education, especially with technology.
My students love learning and interacting with science equipment.
Students work daily to acquire new concepts in all areas of learning. Currently, in science, I have created my own personal kits so that students may experience science outside of the textbook. My kits include animals skulls to teach adaptations, small microscopes to view small objects, a rock collection for Geology, wires to build flashlights, and we have a small garden at our school to view real life science. With your help, I can extend science lessons for my students by providing opportunities to see real examples of the microscopic world with these microorganism slides.
My Project
Students get excited when they learn that there is a micro world in existence around us. We have 9 microscopes to view pond water, but struggle to view enough microorganisms or a variety of microorganism to make the lesson worthwhile.
These slides will supplement our life science lesson by giving students a clearer example of the variation of living organisms in pond water in comparison to the common organisms students are already familiar with in their everyday lives.
This lesson will open their mind to the understanding that there is a possibility of life elsewhere in our universe as we begin to explore space, planets, stars, and satellites.
