I teach in a functional unit classroom for students with moderate to severe disabilities for Kindergarten to 5th grade. There are many challenges my students must overcome each day. Tasks that are simple for general education students may require much more focus and determination for students with disabilities to achieve.
"See the able, not the label."
In one school day, my students may work on communicating, writing, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, reading, math, science, social studies, and social skills.
My Project
The books selected for this project were identified by the needs of my students. Board books are sturdier than paperback. Students with vision impairments and other disabilities need books to be have simplistic illustrations and repeated words. Sing a long books with repeated words like "Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" improve gross motor, communication, and literacy skills. Art projects help my students improve their communication and fine motor skills. Students improve communication skills by using an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Device to request materials, follow directions, and describe each others art work. We have limited space in our resource room which is why we need a drying rack to store our art projects.
