We live in a poor rural county in NC where students are on the FREE lunch program. Maintaining school supplies throughout the year can be challenging.
The recent hurricane hit our area very hard in September; we lost almost three weeks of school and several students suffered water and/or tornado damage to their homes.
Students work hard to have what they need daily in class, but sometimes problems occur and the needed supplies take a second priority. Money is not always spent on textbooks and/or workbooks, so we on math work from other places. A digital camera can be so helpful to share information that a teacher cannot write on the board or make multiple copies of.
My Project
There are times when a math problem needs solving for the students in class to see them worked out in real time by using a document camera. That might include using a line graph that shows change over time or ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
A document camera can take a problem, project it while the teacher models its solution step by step, much like what a transparency used to do on the overhead projector!
It's an integral part of the teaching process, especially in math.
Without textbooks and workbooks, we rely more and more on digital technology to present math problems and a document camera can be a big help without making so many paper hand out copies to students.
