Dr. Generette from Washington DC is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the tool that will support their ability to respond in writing with technology. The Tablets will provide the resource for daily submission. The quality of the writing and level of critical thinking improves.

I love working with these students. Everyday is an eye-opening day for me. We talk about what we are reading, and the students really love to read.
The fourth and fifth graders want to know more about the world outside of the one in which they live.
The students are ages 8-11 years old. They have to endure trauma as a daily part of their lives, but their parents are doing the best that they can with what is available to them. The students are very curious and lively. They ask questions bout the cultures, customs and nuances that they do not recognize as they read.
This makes my job so much more rewarding for me because the questions and conversations guide their discovery and my lesson planning.
Each day will begin with independent reading of a class selected novel. Some parts may be read aloud by the teacher. There will be a purpose for listening and reading to engage the students in some critical thinking as they listen and read
Students will be able to respond to portions of the daily assigned reading that is done daily by journaling based on the following prompts;
1.What do you think the author meant by...? What from the text makes you think that?
2. Why do you think the character...did...? What makes you think that?
3. Does this story remind you of another story that you have read? Tell us why using specific details from both stories.
4. If you were to meet the author, what questions might you have for him/her? Why?
The journal responses will be formatted into the class padlet and shown on the classroom SMART board once a week so the entire class can share their individual responses and their classmates can respond to one another.
