My Students

This year I will be working with eager to learn, 5, 6 and 7 year olds in a remediation/intervention setting. Our school is located in an area where more than three-quarters of our students come from low-income households and often have difficult including educational materials into their daily routines. Despite the hardships that many students face, these children enter my classroom every day with smile on their faces and pockets full of questions.

My students are curious, full of wonder, enthusiastic, creative and are always ready to explore the world around them.

They find joy in the smallest things, such as reading a new book, using crayons, scissors and glue. They "light up" each time they learn a new letter, write a new word or identify snap words in their books. They see school as a great adventure where they can share, investigate, experiment and learn.

My Project

Young students learn to gain a love of reading through the modeling of their teachers. Unfortunately, my classroom does not contain literature rich "on-level" books that interest my little readers. Many of the books I currently possess are old or too difficult for kindergarten and 1st graders to read.

Leveled readers provide my students the opportunity to become confident, successful and excited readers!

My students need a variety of books that not only "catch their eye," but are also on their reading level. These books will allow them to use their reading strategies, such as "eagle eyes" to find pictures to help them figure out words or "stretchy snake" to help them sound our unfamiliar words. As students move from level to level, these books will give them the opportunity to become avid and fluent readers.
