With a welcome mat, house plants, curtains, reading pillows, I have worked hard and searched many yard sales to create a warm and welcoming environment in my "Reading Room" for the struggling readers and writers that walk through my door every day. I know their names, their interests, and their daily battle with literacy. I believe in them and know they can succeed armed with a positive attitude, a little patience, and the right tools.
I am the Reading and Writing Specialist at a large middle school in the fourth most populous community in New Hampshire.
My students come from all walks of life, with varying abilities, disabilities, cultures, incomes, and interests. They have taught me words in Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, and German. In return, I would like to help them break the code of the English language, equip them with tools for success, and instill a love of literacy and learning in them.
My Project
I know they say "don't judge a book by its cover," but let's face it. The more interesting the book cover is, the more likely we are to read it. Book covers are so helpful for engaging low readers and helping them make good book choices. They love when I do book talks and show off books that might interest them. I have been brainstorming ways for them see--more than just spines--even more high interest book covers in our classroom library.
Two front-facing book displays would allow me to show off even more titles and covers in my classroom library.
One shelf would be for fiction and the other for nonfiction. I would be able to tailor my displays to match my students' reading abilities, interests, and current units. These books would be flying off the shelves!
