Here at our Elementary School in Flint, Michigan our students come to school to be loved and nurtured. They have suffered from the water crisis for the past three years. This has caused great turmoil within the families homes.
My students are in a self contained cognitively impaired classroom grades K-3.
Many of these children have never had the opportunity to hear a story, or to hold and read a book until they come to school. These children love cuddle on the carpet to hear stories and look at the pictures. They are so intrigued and memorized by the words and pictures each and every day we read a story. They are always asking so many inquisitive questions as I am reading.
These children love to sit and look through story books and their pictures as well read or make up stories.
My Project
Many of our students have never seen or held a book until they came to school. Many of them have never been read to either until they entered school. With this being said a library of age appropriate books is so important.
We are in need of of educational books of interest.
We have many themes that we work on each week and are in need of educational books for these themes. Some of them are animals, seasons, life cycles, presidents, black history, inventors, and planets.
Having a proper library is essential for teaching. Without these books our classroom is lacking many fundamentals.
It has been a goal to read a book or more everyday to my class and I have nearly succeeded. With the appropriate library I will be able to continue to reach my goals of submerging my students with literacy everyday.
