Hi, I teach a cross categorical kindergarten class. Each year brings a new set of students with a new set of needs. One thing that remains constant is the need for all students to acquire alphabet knowledge. In the cross categorical setting we are using an alphabet cueing system that uses characters in the place of letter names. Last year I was fortunate to be one of twenty teachers to attend and receive the basic materials for an alphabet cueing system that is research-based and proven to be effective with special needs students, non-English speaking students, and typically developing students. Imagine my surprise when almost all of my children could identify all of the letters of the alphabet and make a sound symbol association by the end of last year. It was thrilling! Letterland introduces letter characters, and for students with disabilities and non-English speaking students these characters provide a connection to something they are most often already familiar with from a previous life experience. Once we've met the character and we know what he or she does in Letterland, we learn the characters shape and sound. As time passes, students learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet without the character and can more easily remember the letter sound with a picture in their head and a kinesthetic motion. It is my wish to provide as many opportunities for repetition and exposure using a variety of Letterland materials to ensure that each student has an opportunity to gain mastery of alphabet knowledge. I am requesting a floor puzzle from the newest Letterland catalog and computer software.
