This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Living in some of the most financially strapped places in NYC, our students with emotional disturbances come to school every day looking for normalcy and a place to build friendships while participating in academics as well as intramural sports. Oftentimes, during both physical education class as well as regular instruction, our students regularly talk about being excited about intramurals practice and what drills they will be running that afternoon or who they will be playing against. Rather than sitting back and looking like they are on different teams, it is important to provide our students the ability to look like a unified team while allowing them to keep their basketball gear safe.
What may seem like a team to us is much more to our students.
With recently funded projects through DonorsChoose.org, my students have been fortunate enough to get brand new shoes, compression shorts, warm-up pants and other basketball apparel. With these brand new items, which is not something common to my students, we need to ensure they have a place to keep them safe with new duffel bags!
My Project
With recent support from DonorsChoose.org, my students on the basketball team have been lucky to get all new basketball apparel from head to toe. Now with all this new gear, they need assorted styles of bags to store their equipment in. Without anywhere to keep their stuff, my students immediately asked if they can get team basketball duffel bags. These assorted bags will allow my students to keep their new, team-issued apparel safe before, during and after games and practices. By providing my students with their own personal bags, they can travel to and from school with their basketball gear in their own personal bags. With unsafe places to keep their stuff, my students were concerned they would lose the stuff that they were appreciative to get. In order to reassure my students that their basketball items are safe, we can come together to provide them with team-issued duffel bags that will be their own personal bag. Together we can provide them with a secure place to keep their basketball gear!
