Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 1st grade students are often limited to their own world, which doesn't include a lot of diversity. Due to the fact that 99% of the students at our school come from low income households, they don't always have the resources they need to expand their knowledge. Many of my students have faced trauma and difficulties at a young age. I have had students tell me that they don't have electricity at home, or that their parent lives "far away." Many of my students don't have anyone to support their academic or emotional growth at home due to conditions outside of their control.
Despite the many obstacles they face, my students work hard to improve their future.
They are a curious group, eager to learn new information and skills. They love getting to know more about the world outside of their neighborhood. They love coming to school, as many of them vocalize during our daily closing circle times.
My Project
Reading instruction in our country has been lacking, to say the least. It has been a disservice to our students and we have seen the effects of this in students coming into first grade not knowing their letters & sounds. The recent National Report Card results clearly delineates this when it says that only 35% of 4th graders are reading proficiently. APM Reports also produced a 3 part documentary (http://apmreports.org/reading), which shows how misled teachers have been in reading instruction.
According to the APM Report documentaries, phonics is THE key component of learning how to read, and Secret Stories "provide the logical explanations for letter sound behavior that the brain craves, aligning perfectly with the science of reading."
Although we often see English as a "tricky" language, there are systematic approaches that teach the patterns in words. By using Secret Stories, students will be able to more quickly learn the patterns to the English language, which will increase their reading fluency and eventually, their comprehension.
