Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think of a world without art. Well before I came here these students had no art! Now they are using their imaginations to create wonderful projects and they use this time for safe self expression.
We are a small school with small funds but BIG imaginations.
I teach K-5 art with a predominantly low income, Hispanic, public school. The students are very vibrant and active and are looking for a safe way to express themselves. There are currently only 255 students that have been living everyday with art.
My Project
My students need art supplies such as paint, smocks and mirrors. With this art materials my students will be able to look in a mirror and express how they see themselves. They will also be able to use their imaginations and create self-portraits of how the world around them sees them (their peers, parents, teachers). They will be able to use these portraits as expressions on how they feel their world perceives them. Then we can go into a discussion of if their perception is real or not. My students will learn how to use their imagination to show people how they truly feel without necessarily using their words. The students will spend their time looking in the mirror dissecting their face and choose a medium on how to show what they feel they look like.
Again, my students have gone everyday with art.
The classroom is full of criteria that needs to be met by the teachers in which they are unable to provide students with the self expression that they need. These materials will allow students to know what it is like to express themselves with more than just a pencil or crayons.
