The cost of sending 40 students to the Hostel Adventure Program in the Marin Headlands is $1022, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
The second graders at McKinley Elementary go to school in the heart of San Francisco, also know as the City by the Bay...and the Pacific Ocean! But many of our students have NEVER visited this vast resource, which the Hostel Adventure Program uses for science education. As two second grade teachers at a Title 1 school, two second grade classrooms (40 students) have received the opportunity, through the Hostel Adventure Program, to overnight at the Marin Headlands, a gorgeous gateway to the Pacific Ocean AND a fabulous outdoor classroom. Once here, amidst the excitement of being in a new environment, program coordinators, naturalists, we, the teachers, and our students, will be able to experience our science standards in a truly hands-on way. Students will be able to use all five senses (tasting only where appropriate!) to study the plants and animals indigenous to the area. We will also tie in historical and cultural perspectives by learning how past Native American groups used these resources and how their roles and connections to each other still form this special ecosystem today. We are looking for help in funding some of the program and transportation costs.
