Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a teacher in a small district in Eastern Oregon. My school serves approximately 700 students in grades K-5, and provide a free breakfast and lunch program. We are one of the top poverty-stricken school districts in the state of Oregon. The majority of our students receive ELL services. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, I provide students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Despite many obstacles in their lives, our students LOVE to learn and be at school!
Second graders love to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. My students are faced with many experiences that may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us think just occur. From the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can control their experiences while in my classroom. My goal is to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic excellence!
My Project
I love teaching 2nd graders and I'm always looking for ways to enhance my teaching and creating a more engaging environment for my students. I've always loved music since I was young and it has impacted who I am today. Currently, our school doesn't have a Music program in 2nd-5th grade and I have witnessed the impact this has created. This year my team decided to take a chance and incorporate music into our classroom by playing ukuleles so that we can inspire the love for music. We realized that music is a powerful tool for learning new concepts or memorizing information. We are now in hopes to teach our students how to play. We have been blessed to have gotten projects funded; however, we are now realizing that we need more ukuleles so that all second graders can be a part of this experience.
Teaching music will help build confidence, encourage independence, and help students appreciate the Arts in the future or give them an outlet to express themselves.
Through ukulele lessons, a child learns about beat, harmony, melody, rhythm, and tempo. They will also learn vocabulary and new learning through song. It would be amazing to have all second graders be able to have the opportunity to play on their own!
