My students need more access to graphic novels at all levels. I have included a variety of books in the cart, including the beautifully illustrated collection of TOON books written at lower reading levels.
I began teaching at a progressive public school in San Francisco this fall. The students at our school are passionate, caring, creative and diverse. Our students are representative of the diversity our city by the bay has to offer, with a large range of socio-economic backgrounds.
They are curious explorers, engaged mathematicians and critical problem solvers.
Their newfound reading and writing abilities enable them to engage with the world in new and exciting ways. The tools they have around them will enable them to interact with each other and the world.
My Project
At this point in the year, second graders are taking the classroom library by storm. They are deep into longer chapter books with engaging characters and more complicated plots. All the while, they are still young children with a deep appreciation for drawings and good humor. Graphic novels are a perfect fit!
I created this project so that I can expand my small collection of graphic novels and grow it into its very own section of the library.
I intentionally chose graphic novels at all levels so that every student in the classroom can access them. I also chose graphic novels that come in series so that students can really get to know characters. Finally, I worked hard to choose graphic novels with female characters and some with characters of color. Please donate and help us grow our collection of graphic novels!
