Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 26 second grade students are from a vibrant, diverse community, and most of the students speak a language other than English at home. My kids and their families are determined to succeed, and together, we are making incredible gains. In the past years, our school has had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district. As it is my second year teaching, I am excited to grow and learn with and from my sweet 7 and 8-year-olds this year. They deserve the best, and this is where you can help.
My Project
As a second grade teacher, one of my main goals is to foster a classroom where my students love to learn. As I was sharpening the measly stash of pencils left in our class basket this morning, I noticed that almost all of them lack an eraser or are two inches long. When I began sharpening, I noticed that the lead of the pencils kept falling out after being sharpened. I went to another classroom to borrow a sharpener and realized that it worked like a charm! I had become so used to pencil lead falling out from dull sharpening blades that I no longer even recognized it as a problem! My classroom needs a new pencil sharpener and more pencils.
Creating a welcoming and engaging learning community means having a classroom full of supplies that make learning accessible and engaging.
Specifically, as we are working through our writing units, I find my students frequently stopping and erasing all of their story and starting over. As a solution, students in my classroom use flair tip pens for writing time. Research shows that flair pens provide the same resistance as a traditional pencil, which is great for handwriting development, but it has the added benefit of not being erasable. Students simply cross out mistakes and continue writing, building perseverance and growing as authors!
This project has a variety of supplies that our class will use to grow and explore as a learning community from pencils, sharpies, whiteboard markers and erasers for students.
With your donation, these artists, mathematicians, readers, and authors will have essential supplies to pursue learning across many different subjects this year.
