Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 28 second grade students are from a vibrant, diverse community, and most of the students speak a language other than English at home. In our class, we have students who's families have been anchored in Oakland for generations as well as students from Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and more! My kids and their families are determined to succeed, and together, we are making incredible gains. In the past years, our school has had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district. As it is my third year teaching, I am excited to grow and learn with and from my sweet 7 and 8-year-olds this year. They deserve the best, and this is where you can help.
My Project
In our second grade class, we have a wide span of reading skills and abilities ranging from just beginning as readers to already reading chapter books. However, most of our class is reading far below grade level. One of the most important ways that students grow as readers is by learning that they love to read and being able to continue their reading at home. Beginning readers need to read a lot of high-quality books that they are engaging! This year my students are OBSESSED with animals and nonfiction books!
We are requesting engaging, high-quality books full of thrilling information and exciting facts, diagrams, and labels!
The books in this project would help us have enough books in our classroom for these readers to take them home every night to read at home with their families, too. While we do already have some books, many of them are well loved and are losing covers and pages.
Families have already met with me this year asking how they can support their readers, and my answer is always, "Read, read, READ at home!" In an effort to support family engagement and family partnership in reading growth, I want to fill the book bags of my striving students with exciting titles and characters that will make these readers want to keep reading with their families at home!
The research shows that students that read at home every night grow more academically, and this will help our families fulfill their goal of making college a reality for every one of these second graders someday. Please help our classroom community have the access to resources at home that they are so excited to use!
