Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of future scientists, including potential botanists. We need more hands-on scientific specimens that can excite my students and encourage them to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
My students are wonderful second graders.
Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college.
My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom.
My Project
These materials will enable my students to really experience the science lessons they are reading about in their science books. My students will be able to use hand magnifiers to examine, describe, and compare each of the seeds and plants that they are learning about. The sunflower seeds will allow each of my students to plant and observe their own flower as it grows in our classroom.
The seed dispersal kit will allow my students to examine the seeds that are talked about in their science book. They will actually be able to do experiments to observe how these seeds have the ability to move. My students will be able to spend their free time looking at the different types of plants and seeds on display in my classroom.
I also help teach science to the other two second grade classes so all the 2nd graders at my school will benefit from these materials.
My students love science!
I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing their science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. I want my students to be able to see the seeds and unusual plants that most of them have only seen pictures of in their science books. I want this project to help inspire my student's imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
