Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 26 second grade students are from a vibrant, diverse community, and most of the students speak a language other than English at home. My kids and their families are determined to succeed, and together, we are making incredible gains. In the past years, our school has had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district. As it is my second year teaching, I am excited to grow and learn with and from my sweet 7 and 8-year-olds this year. They deserve the best, and this is where you can help.
My Project
Research shows that having access to high quality, engaging books is the best way to support reading growth for students. Because of so many generous donors, we have been able to build a library full of exciting, interesting books in my classroom. However, many of my students do not have access to high-quality texts at home.
In order to ensure that their academic growth continues at home, my students need durable book bags to bring 10-15 books from our classroom home every day.
The book bags that my students are currently using have been used by many years of students, and they are now full of holes. My students need new bags to help keep our wonderful books safe as they journey back and forth to school every single day. These book bags will serve two whole classes of second grade students for many years to come!
