Ms. Moyer from Cleveland OH is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Second Graders Getting an Ear-ful of Reading!

My students need the cases to protect the Insignia tablets I just received. I also would like them to have headphones to work independently. The students can listen to stories from Raz Kids A-Z .

My Students

I teach in a urban setting with 100% of my students receiving a reduced/free lunch. I have a melting pot of students who have come from all over the world. Several students are English as a Second Language (ESL). This is an obsticle for them to learn the subject as well as speak English. This is another obsticle as they get older, the parent is now limited to helping the child at home. I have 19 students on Reading Improvement Plans (RIMP). Having a RIMP means the child has many challenges with reading, whether it be limited exposure to texts or books or receiving the extra support from home. Teaching in a urban setting also brings the obsticle of not having technology in the home. Many homes have cell phones with internet but this limits the ability for many academic sites a child can use to help with reading, math, science, social studies. Children in my classroom take all their tests on a computer. The lack of exposure to how to manipulate a computer is very severe and thus limits the child from being

Many of my students come from homes with parents having a limited ability to read themselves.

My Project

The students will use the tablets in center time. During the rotation the tablets will allow them to listen to and read using several applications. The stories students will be listening will reinforce fluency and allow ESL students to hear the word spoken correctly. The applications the students will use differ from grammar usage, comprehension, editing sentences, spelling, antonyms/synonyms and figurative language. An example of the applications studnets use in reading is Reading A-Z, Raz Kids. Not only wil students use technology in reading but also in math. We use IXL. Lastly the students will use the tablets to share their reading/math skills/progress with their parents during conferences. Having the cases for protection and the headphones for independent work will make for a successful time!
