Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade at a small Title I early childhood school in the Bronx. The students in my classroom are twenty-five exceptionally bright, eager learners. Literacy instruction in the New York City public schools tends to dominate most of the day, leaving little time for science and social studies. Typically, most of the literacy time is spend with students reading in various groupings and responding to the books they read through writing. This year, I'm hoping to broaden my students' experience of literacy by teaching inter-disciplinary units on science and social studies topics that they will study, explore, and respond to in a vareity of ways. Unfortunately, my school has few computers, no internet access in most rooms, and a total of about ten reference books for the entire school. Thus, if I want my students to create projects on topics such as the rainforest, immigration and outer space, they need high quality, age-appropriate reference materials at their disposal. I am asking for a collection of dictionaries, children's encyclopedias, atlases, and other non-fiction reference materials. With the materials in my classroom, I can teach my students valuable research skills. With these skills and these materials, they will be able to access information about the world outside of the Bronx, and they will come to see literacy as valuable not only for the experience of reading a good story, but also as a key source of information. I have discussed topics for these units with my students and they are overwhelmingly excited for to explore these new topics and ideas. I look forward to all of the learning these materials will bring, as well as the looks of joy and excitment on their faces when I bring out these books and tell them that we really will be able to explore the topics that excite them so much.
