This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The vast majority of the students will enter this school year below grade level. However, by the end of the school, I expect to decrease or close their reading gaps by expanding their minds with a variety of nonfiction articles. The biggest challenge that my students face are the lack of resources.
Our school is centrally located in a poverty stricken area.
The vast majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The students receive an additional hour of reading due to poor scores on standardized assessments. Many of the students have a great difficult reading and comprehending nonfiction articles. The students at my school enjoy reading, however, they are more familiar with fiction stories. Many of the students don't have additional reading resources for home. Therefore, all of their reading is acquired during school.
I am asking for 20 subscriptions to Time for Kids Magazines, a set of nonfiction reading comprehension cards/articles for read to self, and a set of nonfiction comprehension folders with articles for small group instruction. My students will use these resources during small group instruction, intervention, and as a read with a partner center. While using these resources my students will learn how to text mark and discuss an articles with his or her partner. The materials will also display how Social Studies and Science can be incorporated into the Reading block. These resources will enhance my students learning capabilities. With nonfiction articles expanding my students' intellectual outlook, I feel it will make my students become effective and efficient readers.
Using these resources daily within my classroom will allow my students to become active and engaging learners.
These resources will also assist my students into becoming independent individuals. Many of the students have a great difficult reading and comprehending nonfiction articles; therefore, using the these resources will help increase the students’ self-esteem and confidence.
