This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Have you noticed the quantity of trash New York City creates? My students are creative problem solvers, and I would like to encourage them to think about how we can tackle garbage in their classroom, homes, school, and streets.
A recycling unit will educate students to see alternatives to creating trash. Students will learn about reducing, reusing and recycling. They will learn what can be recycled, how the city recycles different products, and how they can help.
In addition, students will be involved in projects that make these ideas come alive. Students will be invited to make a mini model of a landfill, create posters that advertise for recycling, see how long it takes for a banana peel to decompose, and read many, many books about garbage.
This is where I need help. I have designed an entire curriculum revolving around exceptional children's literature that explores garbage, recycling, and children helping the environment. Nobody else has explained to these students that they can make a difference. We can!
