Second Grade Scientists Searching for Super Scholastic Resources
Help me give my students Scholastic Magazines including the classroom issues, the Science add-on pack, and the STEAM resources to increase interest levels, improve vocabulary, and to provide grade-level science content.
I am in my 29th year of teaching at an elementary school which in east-central Spokane. Although my students face many challenges, like generational poverty and their basic needs not being met, they show up every day to learn. Unfortunately, our PTA can't begin to compete with PTAs from the more affluent schools (our $5,000 dollars earned compared to their $30,000 +) doesn't leave much money for the extra items I would enjoy using in my classroom like current technology, STEM materials, and quality nonfiction readers.
Many of our students return to tell us about their adventures in middle school, high school, and college.
I feel so proud when I've been a part of that young adult's success!
My students live in an impoverished area in East Spokane. Many students come from families experiencing generational poverty and the issues included with this. Students read infrequently at home, which leads to low vocabulary skills and low reading levels. Students in high-need schools oftentimes have fewer books and magazines at home. By reading these colorful Scholastic Magazines at school, the students can improve vocabulary and reading skills with the support of a teacher. Then, they can take these resources home to read again.
Finally, science topics are very engaging.
Topics are aligned with grade level science standards and include real pictures matching the text.
Please help us purchase Scholastic Magazines and Super Science.
