When our students come into the classroom, they know they are entering a safe place where they can learn, grow, and explore. The Common Core state standards place a large emphasis on reading for information from nonfiction texts. The students are eager to learn as much as they can about the world.
There is something magical about watching a child learn to read and grow in their confidence as a reader.
As teachers, we are fortunate enough to witness this process on a daily basis. Instilling a love of books and reading is something we aim to do every day. My school works over time to provide a positive academic, social, and emotional environment for our children. We believe one of the best ways to do this is to provide ample opportunities for all children to have equal access to the best teachers and the best books!
My Project
Through this project, we hope to offer more nonfiction books at the children’s different reading levels to be placed in our second grade classrooms. From there, students will be able to select books based on their individual reading levels. These nonfiction books will be used for take-home books and for the children’s own reading pleasure, thus, adding to their knowledge of many different topics.
Reading is essential for gaining new knowledge.
As Garrison Keillor says, "A book is a gift you can open again and again." The books provided by this project are gifts that will allow our students to explore.
