Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During Summer School, I had the opportunity to meet 1/3 of the students I will be teaching next year. They are enthusiastic learners and are interested in learning through a variety of activities. During the summer session, they learned best through hands-on activities!
This coming year, I will be teaching about 24 students.
They are willing to push themselves and try their best. I teach at a school in Northern California. Many of my students are English language learners. Our school goal is to provide all students, especially our ELLs, the opportunity to develop their oral language skills.
My Project
We need musical plays to help them with comprehension, vocabulary development, and public speaking. My students will utilize the materials I am requesting by reciting their lines during practices in class, a dress rehearsal and final performance.
This past school year, students performed a play called "Character Matters." The students LOVED it! Many of them memorized their lines and learned how to overcome their jitters and perform their lines with expression in front of the audience. We even made the city newspaper! I hope to have students perform two or three plays this year, in addition to smaller plays within the classroom, and relate them to second grade content we are learning.
This project will improve my classroom by providing my students an opportunity to learn vocabulary and content knowledge through a musical perspective.
They will also be able to improve their pubic speaking abilities. My students have an interest in performing, but have been given few opportunities to do so. My goal is to get them comfortable with performing and public speaking from an early age, while also teaching them vocabulary and content through a fun musical performance.
