Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic seven year olds whose enthusiasm for social interaction is contagious. This year is especially challenging as we build relationships with one another remotely. Nonetheless their personalities are jumping off the screen. Recess breaks are especially boisterous and full of warm regards and silly insights as they rediscover each other as grown-up ish second graders. Baby brothers and sisters are introduced and cooed over, many teeth have been lost, vacations turned inward and celebrations finding new screen venues. Many students speak two languages. Many parents are essential workers and all families close knit.
My students feel most capable in math world.
We are all learning the language of math together. Many of my kiddos will say they "love math" even if they're not quite on grade level. It's where they have the most stamina and withstand the most puzzling expressions of language because numbers behave in certain ways no matter the language.
I use their "can do" attitude in math to pivot into language and all the ways they can use "comprehension" and close reading to become math detectives. The virtual manipulatives and immediate feedback help them see where and how they "figured things out."
My Project
There’s something magical about second graders taking ownership for figuring stuff out. This is especially tough during our homebound public school instruction. Individualized learning supports each student's journey of understanding big ideas, like place value and strategizing different ways to compose the number 20.
HappyNumbers gives my little learners differentiation with accountability.
I cheer them on in their self-paced math adventures and help them learn how to take the next step without shortchanging them of personal accomplishment. It’s the gentle push for the must-do practice that evolves into the can-do attitude.
The donations to this project will help increase my students' engagement, perseverance, and joy in math learning!
