Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and Special Education students.
They have been working hard all year to publish their writing by hand. Typing and printing their work makes all students feel proud of their work despite any learning or fine motor challenges.
Many students and families in this neighborhood are homeless or living in poverty.
They deserve to have their writing published and to feel immensely proud of what they have created.
My Project
In our classroom we are constantly reading rich literature. The students are writing, but not always seeing themselves as authors. They don't always see the connection between what they are writing and the stories and informational texts that we are reading.
Since beginning this project students have been highly motivated.
They are seeing their writing as just as important as any other published author. They are not just learning how to write, but how to be writers. They are inspiring one another daily. They are seeing themselves as authors and are motivated to complete the entire writing process start to finish.
Students are handwriting and revising their work. Currently, we are writing imaginative narratives, next unit we will be writing animal reports. After the final revisions have been made students will type their writing. The process takes triple the amount of paper to get into the correct format for binding. Our school provides a limited amount of paper per teacher.
After the writing is printed it is sewn into chipboard books. The pages are sewn with floss or string, and secured with masking tape. The exterior of the cardboard is covered in paper that has been glued. The binding of the book is complete with strong book tape, ensuring that the books last.
For the final touch, library cards will be added so that students can have others read their masterpieces, and keep a record of how many people enjoyed their hard work.
