Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 25 kindergartners who come to school excited and eager to learn. Over 90% of our students live in poverty and receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The town is sweet with a lot of hard working families who are trying to do what is best for their children.
This means that a lot of my kiddos are cared for by older siblings and great grandmas while their parents work in jobs with difficult hours and schedules that change often.
My students come to school with some big hurdles to overcome when we look at filling the achievement gap between our students and some of their peers in neighboring districts. I am always amazed at how hard my students work and the perseverance that they display in order to reach the standard that has been set for them.
My Project
My students are in kindergarten, and their little bodies were not made to be still. Flexible seating will allow my students the ability to move and fidget when their bodies need to. Their minds work best when their bodies are comfortable.
Wiggle seats and round cushions will allow students to comfortably sit at lowered tables or on the floor around the classroom.
Balance balls will provide a different option at our chair height tables and will help my kiddos to build their core body strength, wiggle, and sit at a table to complete their work. Different flexible seating options will increase my students' overall engagement in learning.
