My students need several forms of seating in which to feel safe and to meet several sensory issues. I hope to make this place a happy escape from what many of them face outside these walls.
Hi! I have 13+ amazing kiddos with unique learning styles that come to my room to find their most beneficial learning environment. We are working together to overcome severe socioeconomic tendencies and to learn to be successful in whatever ways we can. These children are loving to learn, but need direct attention given to individual styles, techniques, and even "tricks" for learning.
They range in ages from 5-12 as of now.
The majority of my students live in an even more rural section of a rural area and many have several obstacles to overcome.
The souls that come in and out of my door are happy children with big smiles and genuine appreciation, and need understanding that goes hand in hand with a variety of flexibilities, styles, and tools. I would love to provide a magical and peaceful place for them when they come to school...a place where they are excited and safe, in the epicenter of the opioid crisis.
My Project
In an area that faces many obstacles, the sweet souls that come in and out of my classroom are struggling with so much more that learning addition and subtraction.
As the epicenter of the opioid crisis right outside our doors, these students need a safe and happy place to BE during the day as well as a place that suits their individual needs for a learning environment.
I want my classroom to provide that safe and happy place.
While teaching them that they can push forward in any circumstance, inside I realize the struggle that many of them will face. I have this moment in time to give my students something to perhaps change and strengthen them for a lifetime. Although I have done what I can to provide a peaceful environment, there is so much more that would be appreciated by children who are used to the bare minimum. They are grateful and excited and I want to use that to help them grow.
Some of the sensory and developmental issues that face these amazing hearts could be lightened with alternative places (seating) to enhance their abilities of relaying knowledge with less focus on the discomfort of a typical desk/chair type setting.
Some of the seating options I am working toward in this project include rockers, bouncers and swings for use during testing and seatwork. These types of alternative seating will provide an outlet for active learners to move while keeping focused on their work. The swinging pods also provide a place to feel secure for those students with the physical need for embrace due to disabilities such as autism as well as emotional issues.
