Our campus is a blended community of students who are Title I (low-income), GATE (gifted), ELL (second language), RSP (mild cognitive/behavioral abilities), SPED (more significant learning/behavioral abilities) and general education. However, since our school site doesn't have a high population of any group, we are not eligible for many state/federal funds that other schools qualify for. So, teachers often end up purchasing devices, supplies, and subscriptions on their own or rely on donations from parents who are able to financially help with any need or wish list.
The students in my class are eager to have a more comfortable and enticing room environment that provides them the flexibility to work in various group settings.
Each year, my student population seems to have more kinesthetic learners. They need to move and do. The use of a variety of grouping arrangements helps to engage students in science activities, literature circles, independent work, etc.
My Project
The collaborative nature of my classroom promotes a variety of student interaction opportunities. Some of the class activites are best performed in different spaces besides traditional desks and chairs.
Having a wide variety of seating options enables students to work around the room more effectively.
Students might work collaboratively around a large table during a science investigation, group together on the floor to read and discuss literature, or sit independently off to the side of the room to complete an assignment. The seating items selected for this project are smaller and more functional than traditional student chairs. This allows for more flexibility when students change from one learning setting to another.
