I work in a school for student with significant disabilities. As a speech and language pathologist, I work with students from ages 3 to 21 years old. Educational services are provided to all students (preschool through 21 years old) with significant disabilities within the our school district and local sending districts that demonstrate a need for highly specialized educational support. I focus on not only speech and language but functional skills such as communication and oral motor skills.
Our students may face many difficulties, but they work hard each day to strive to be the best they can be.
Communication devices and the apps that are needed for the children can be expensive and our low income families can not afford to buy them for the children. Communication devices will allow our children to have a voice. To express their wants and needs to other peers, as well as adults. They will be able to increase their vocabulary and their communication abilities can thrive with these devices. We are trying to give voices to children who are unable to speak.
My Project
The speech therapy room that I work in houses several speech therapists. We each have designated areas in the room where we hold therapy sessions and work with small groups of students and individual students. One group table in our room does not have any chairs. I would love to have a set of chairs for this area so I have another space to work with students. This space would be perfect for pulling students to work on language, articulation and learning to utilize communication devices to effectively communicate their wants and needs. Clorox wipes will allow me to keep this space clean! You generosity in helping to provide this wonderful work space would mean so much to us!
