My students are wonderfully unique individuals who love expressing themselves and are not afraid to have a little fun. Students in my class have a wide variety of needs, but are also hard working and perseverant through academic challenges. They love helping others and being part of a community.
Most of all, my students love to learn when the task is appropriate to their learning style.
Students in my class do their best work when they can get the attention and support they need through small group work. When my students are able to work in small groups, not only do they get more support from teachers, they are also able to problem solve with peers and be part of a community of learners. Providing students with these opportunities not only helps them to learn the academic skills they need to be successful, it also helps them to learn the "soft skills" they need to work with others.
My Project
Something magical happens when students are able to sit at a single table together and discuss a written text. Students see themselves as individuals with an important contribution to make to their community. They have the opportunity to hear others ideas, and practice speaking and listening skills with peers.
Seating that allows for small group work will give my students the hands on learning experiences they need and motivate them to try their hardest through peer to peer learning.
The learning environment needs to be conducive to student interaction and participation. The current seating arrangement in my classroom does not allow students in interact with one another in a meaningful way. I would like to purchase stacking chairs for seating that allows for more small group work and station teaching in my classroom. I would also like to purchase a moveable whiteboard to use in small group lessons. These items will help facilitate group participation and individualized hands on learning.
