My students need 6 URBNFit Excercise Balls, 6 URBNFit Bases for the balls, and 6 National Public Seating 18 inch Stools to use instead of hard, uncomfortable chairs.
Do you remember being a third grader? Stepping into the classroom and feeling like you were now one of the big kids? Being independent and taking charge of your own learning? Whether they are creating experiments in science or writing a personal narrative; it is amazing to see the excitement in their eyes! These kids are inquisitive, funny, enthusiastic, and just amazing!
I teach in an inclusive classroom that encourages movement, mindfulness, and peer collaboration.
This year I have twenty-five students. They come from a small, diverse town that has a strong sense of community. Even though our school is in a town that is small and suburban, we do have students that come from very different backgrounds and environments. While I wish my students all came from two parent, financially stable homes, not all of them do. Some do receive free lunch, need help with attaining school supplies during the year, and finding a safe place to lay their head at night. Despite these challenges my students stay curious and excited to learn!
My Project
Have you ever watched a third grader trying to sit still and attempt to learn in a hard seat? I have and after observing my students for eight years, I am convinced that flexible seating is needed in my classroom. One of the biggest reasons for this is that students need to move. Physical activity is linked to both higher academic and behavioral performance. We all want that for our students, so why not do whatever we can to help them achieve this goal? This is why I would like a small couch and two flex-seats for my classroom this year.
The seating choices will allow the students to sit in a way that will be physically comfortable for them, thus increasing their engagement and motivation.
Since I have already had a couple of flexible seating project funded, I would like to continue to build upon that and obtain more varied seating options for my students. When students feel empowered to choose where and how they work best, it shows. Thank you for allowing me to help my students wiggle, move, and learn in a way that is comfortable for them.
