This year I have the pleasure of working with a group of high energy, enthusiastic 3rd graders that work best when given lots of movement and choice. They are tech-savvy, inquiry-based learners that use design-thinking for problem solving daily.
Brain research confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process.
Eric Jensen (2000), in his article "Moving with the Brain in Mind", protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students, but for teachers. Flexible seating is one way for me to provide more opportunities to move in the classroom.
I pride myself on using research based teaching strategies and data to drive instruction. My goal is to create a safe, creative learning community in which everyone feels comfortable taking risks and has the opportunity to achieve at his or her highest potential.
My Project
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Benefits include improvement in grades; happier, engaged students; and more frequent movement in the classroom.

As adults we self-select how we learn and work best; you can see this every time you walk into your favorite coffee shop. I want the same opportunities for my students so they have the skills to thrive. We already have standing desks and opportunities to work around the room using clipboards. These wobble seats, desk risers, and bouncy bands are another way to give students the chance to move where they learn best.
