Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Uplift Heights is a college preparatory school nestled in the community of West Dallas where the college graduation rate is 2.2% and 67% of residents have never completed high school. Our mission is to provide scholars with a quality education that will help propel them to, and keep them in, college. My ninth grade Algebra 1 classes at Heights are comprised of a myriad of personalities and student needs.
My scholars are brimming with potential and tons of energy.
This project will provide flexible seating options for those scholars who need to wiggle a little more than others. The goal is to create a learning environment that meets the needs of all students as they prepare for life outside of Heights.
My Project
Algebra 1 is the foundation for all other math courses that students will encounter. Additionally, in the state of Texas Algebra 1 is a state-tested subject. Students may not graduate high school if they have not passed their End of Course exam. For these reasons it is imperative that students receive the best possible instruction in this subject. For many students, the best possible instruction includes a classroom environment that physically meets their needs.
This project will provide 5 standing desks, 4 stability balls, and 6 bouncy bands to a classroom full of fidgety/energetic students.The idea is that these materials satisfy our scholars' need for movement while freeing their minds for learning.
