My students need tall stools for seating options work at a standing height table and some more comfortable saucer chairs to do more individualized tasks in.
With Math Intervention, my students are at risk for failure. I pull the students who score in the bottom 1-25th percentile in Math and work with them on foundational skills that are required to perform on grade level in the regular classroom. For example, if a 7th grader does not understand Scale, chances are that they struggled with 4th grade equivalent fractions. Now that they are years beyond 4th grade, I am the one who fills in the gaps, teaching them the lower skills they missed over the years so that they can do the grade-level work in their regular math class with their peers.
Most of my students fall off the radar because they are not low enough for Special Education, but not high enough for regular classes, so it is my job to make sure they have the basic skills they missed so that they don't fall through the cracks of the system.
I teach middle schoolers everything they missed in past years from addition and subtraction to basic algebraic concepts. We also take what we learn and I show them how the skill is applied in their grade-level classroom with rigorous tasks and a variety activities.
My Project
I am desperate to upgrade my current, broken seating system and provide updated and more adult-like working areas for my students. The metal bar stools are modern and will give my students an unusual seating option for small group activities at a taller table. The comfy saucer chairs will be used for independent work in a more comfortable setting with clipboards.
When students are comfortable in their environment and their teacher, they will show greater effort and more growth than in the uninviting, sterile boxes from yesterday.
I hope that they find our classroom to be a refuge, a safe place free of judgment where they are comfortable making mistakes so that I can turn their learning around and make them more successful in the regular classroom where they leave. It could all start with a comfy chair.
