Help me give my students more flexible seating options and more sturdy boxes for their journals and books. I want to give students in my class opportunities to make responsible choices and tools to help them be organized.
I have the privilege of being the science teacher for our entire sixth grade. My goal is to spark a love for science in my students. I love to see them light up with curiosity and seek answers to their own questions.
My students really enjoy hands-on activities and science labs.
One of their favorite lessons is a chemical changes lab which gives them the opportunity to see what happens when you combine iodine and baking soda. (It turns purple!) They also enjoy learning about the periodic table of elements. This year we created an interactive periodic table together. Each student made a presentation about one element and we created QR codes to add to our classroom bulletin board of the periodic table.
I teach every sixth grade student; this is about 135 students each year. My students are about 50% upper middle class and 50% lower income students. Many are English language learners or have other special needs. Our campus is not a Title I school, so we do not receive the extra state funding which would go towards providing extra support like tutors or supplemental materials for our at-risk students.
My Project
Students love to make choices about their learning. Flexible seating is one way I can offer students opportunities to make choices for themselves. It gives them a chance to make responsible choices about where to sit based on their own needs. This year I have a room full of students who like to move, and we need more options to meet their needs. My students love using the wobble cushions and busy bands that we already have, so I want to offer them another option to meet their needs. I think these wobble stools will be a great addition to our flexible seating.
In addition to making responsible choices about where they sit, my students are also learning to be responsible for their supplies.
I would like to provide them with study book boxes to help them keep their journals and books organized. We currently use cardboard book boxes, but they aren't quite wide enough to hold all the books my students enjoy reading. These boxes have quickly begun to wear out, and are becoming more difficult to keep organized. Providing my 3rd grade students with effective organization strategies and tools is important as they are continuing to develop their organization skills.
