Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the most amazing, resilient people you will ever meet. Looking at their smiling faces you would never know the obstacles or trauma they have experienced growing up. I teach reading and math to special education students in Camden, NJ. My students disabilities include: Learning Disability, Emotionally Disturbed, Intellectual Disability, Multiple Disabled, ADHD, and Communication Impaired. Most of my students are reading atleast two years below grade level and performing one to two years behind in math. Although, they are unable to fully access general education curriculum, they work hard in small intervention groups everyday to bring up their levels.
My Project
My students have trouble staying in one spot for a period of time (Some as little as 3 minutes). So you can imagine how difficult it can be to keep students seated and engaged during a 90 minute reading block. Bean bag chairs would allow my students different options then just regular, small plastic chairs or the floor. They would feel more comfortable and focused for sitting longer periods of time and would be able to complete their independent reading or writing in different areas of the room. The "little things" make a big difference to my students and just a small change of seating would help them become excited to come to reading class. When students are excited to come to class their engagement level increases, which would increase reading levels and help them better succeed this school year and beyond.
