This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

After 18 months of being isolated from their friends and teachers, they are still trying to navigate the return to school and academics.

Many of them have developed anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal hasn't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they have experienced for the past 18 months. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID-19 and are struggling with grief as well.

Although I can't solve these problems, I continue to do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

Our technology maker space is growing every day, thanks to DonorsChoose! We now have 12 stools to use at our high tables, but we'd like five more as we try to build up to enough stools for everyone to use. What sorts of projects are we doing when we use these stools? So far, students have made light-up cards using paper circuits, they have made keyboards and drums using our Makey-Makey kits, they have designed and built bridges out of popsicle sticks, and they have made gingerbread houses that had to withstand a "polar storm"—a strong fan, but still! Those are just a few of the hands-on design and engineering projects we have created this year.

We can't wait to get into making even more cool things, such as 3D prints, t-shirts, buttons, and more, but it sure would be nice if more students had a place to sit when we're doing those things!
