My Students

Many children have difficulty processing everyday sensory information such as sounds, sights and smells. This is usually called having sensory integration difficulties, or sensory sensitivity. It can have a profound effect on a how children function in a typical classroom.

We are a very active Kindergarten classroom.

For many of my students this year, this is the first school experience. It is my goal to make it a positive and fun year where everyone feels safe and is able to learn. We have alternative seating that includes seat balls and wobble chairs.

My Project

I am looking for a way to shield my students who are struggling with the noise and action of a Kindergarten room. Having the IKEA chairs allow a student to shield themselves from the noise and movement going on around. Sometimes blocking it out for 5 minutes is all that is needed to calm and re-orient a child back into the classroom routine.

Having 2 swivel chairs will help tremendously because it will directly support the students who need it most, but will also allow other children to use it.

Kids don't often understand why one child is using something "different," so I like to have more than one available so everyone can take turns.
