I knew when I was hired to teach 5th grade at my school three years ago that I was lucky. Not just lucky to be back in the district that I student taught in ten years ago, but the kind of lucky in knowing you are joining a school community that supports the success of its students. The previous three years are evidence that my initial excitement would prove true. This year I moved to 4th grade to teach an energetic group of kids that truly enjoy our school and learning as much as me.
With the support of this community, we are utilizing innovative ways to deliver a rigorous curriculum.
Last year our PTO realized how much our students and staff would benefit from an upgrade to technology and funded each classroom. Students benefit with more engaging lessons, parents have access to many of the projects completed by their children, and teachers have a way reach the many different learning styles of today's students. The students in my class this year are very excited to come to school, knowing that they can follow different paths toward their own success.
My Project
Students benefit from a classroom that offers flexibility. Research and best practices point out that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
I can attest to the benefits of flexible seating because I was lucky enough to win the use of a few of the 15" Hokki Stools at a district technology fair last year.
Currently, I rotate student use of them. At this time I can say that the demand far outweighs the supply. When a stool is in a students possession, I notice how they engage their core, decrease the incidence of fatigue (head on desk or movement around the room), and more focus on independent seat work. This is only the first step in my quest to offer my students options to provide a successful workspace.
